Flowers and Netherlands are connected to each other. The Dutch flower auction is the largest in the world. In addition, flowers have a cultural and historical impact on the Netherlands. From this idea arose the glass flowers pyramid ‘Lambertus’. Lambertus is inspired by a flower pyramid which is on display at the Rijksmuseum (BK-2004-4-A). The original is made around 1700 by a company called the ‘Metaale Pot’ which was owned by Lambertus van Eenhoorn. The proportions of ‘Lambertus’ correspond to the original version. Measured from ground to the top, including the flowers ‘Lambertus’ is about 101cm tall. The stairs of ‘Lambertus’ are square. Each ascending step becomes smaller to create the pyramid shape. Two steps are intentionally left blank to lead the eyes to the top.
The original stacked tulip vases were created at the court of William and his wife Mary. The Orange crown of ‘Lambertus’ refers to Dutch Royal family and this history. The remaining steps are red, white and blue colors of the Dutch flag. With good lighting ‘Lambertus’ many colors will shine.
The glass steps are manufactured by the Dutch glassblowers, in this way creating extra attention for Dutch craftsmanship. Lambertus is my entry for the Rijksstudio Award 2017. The Rijksstudio award is the design award of the Dutch Rijksmuseum.
